    Amersham Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Four Weddings
      If you happen to stay in room in The Crown Inn, you might be in the room that was the location of the bedroom scene with Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell in the classic Brit rom-com Four Weddings and a Funeral.
    2. Woodrow House Pt 1
      Another famous address is Woodrow High House. The Grade II listed manor house was at one time home to the Tyrwhitt-Drake family, descendants of Sir Francis Drake. During the English Civil War it was the home of the wife and daughters of Oliver Cromwell. At the time of the Monmouth Rebellion, 1685, Lady Helena Stanhope was resident. Her fiancé, Sir Peter Bostock had sided with the failed rebellion and after fleeing, hid in the old grotto to evade the King’s men where Lady Helena would deliver food to him daily. After he was discovered and sentenced to death, the distraught Helena committed suicide. Her ghost, ‘The Green Lady of Woodrow’ is said to still haunt the house.
    3. Woodrow House Pt 2
      Today the magnificent building is owned by London Youth and was a favourite of Prince Philip. The first ever Duke of Edinburgh Awards test expedition set out from Woodrow House in 1957.
    4. Suffrage
      Another well-connected local was Louise Jopling. A talented artist, her social circle included other artists including Kate Perugini, the daughter of Charles Dickens and Princess Louise, an accomplished sculptor and the daughter of Queen Victoria. Guests to her parents’ home also included the likes of Oscar Wilde. Louise was a leader of the Suffragette movement and even wrote poetry on the theme;Oh! Womenkind of England now
      Be worthy of your blood;
      Let courage shine upon your brow,
      In spite of men and mud…
      Come, Men of England! Show your pluck,
      And free your women too;
      About the House, there is no luck
      Unless its ruled by two!
    5. Baby Boom
      During WWII a factory in Amersham made parachutes and barrage balloons for the MoD. The town was also one of many locations where troops were gathered, well away from coastal towns, in the build up to D-Day. On the outskirts of the town Shardeloes, a grand house was converted into a maternity hospital for Londoners to have their children away from the blitz. Over 5,200 children had been born there by the time it closed in 1948 including the lyricist Sir Tim Rice who co-wrote Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cats, Evita and Chess.

    About Amersham

    Amersham has been home to noble families, was a (quietly) busy location during WWII and even played a role in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Today it is a perfect picture of English life, delightful shops, delicious eateries, picturesque houses and wonderful countryside to get out and explore, it’s little wonder it has become such a sought-after location for movers and shakers.

    Rainbow Removals have been providing bespoke relocation services to the town for a number years, our high level of customer care and eco credentials provide our clients with the perfect combination for a better quality of relocation.

    Things to do & see

    Amersham has an excellent museum covering the history of the town and surrounding area, there is also the slightly more niche Amersham Fair Organ Museum. If you cuddly days out then Kew Little Pigs is one of the cutest spots on the planet, a farm and visitor centre dedicated to miniature pigs where guests can feed and stroke these petite porcine pals.

    The nearest golf course is just a 5-minute drive away and there are 3 more in the area. Football fans have nearby Watford FC to shout at. Cyclists are spoilt for choice with so many great routes. Movie buffs can be at the magical world of Warner Bros Studios (home to the Harry Potter experience) in just over 20 minutes. Foodies have a seemingly endless array of farm shops, country pubs, cafes and delis to get their teeth into. There is even the Mad Squirrel micro-brewery and tap room for beer-lovers. We’ll drink to that!

    Transport

    Commuters can reach the centre of London in as list as 32 minutes by train. The M1, M40, M25 and M4 are all within easy reach and high-flyers can be at Heathrow in 25 minutes. If you prefer greener travel, Amersham has cycle lanes and routes to get you around the town by pedal-power alone.
