Aylesbury Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Crime And Punishment
Not far from the scene of one of the most infamous crimes in British history, Aylesbury was the site of trial of the first 12 Great Train Robbers put before a judge. The huge interest in the case meant it had to be held in the specially adapted Council Chamber, with sentencing switched to the more traditional Crown Court building. The court hit the headlines again in 1977 when Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were charged with possession of LSD and cocaine. Cameras arrived once more in the 90s when TV show Judge Deed was filmed there. The court House (which once had a gallery for hanging condemned prisoners!), was finally closed.
    2. Kept Rolling
The Stones had visited Aylesbury before… Well, most of them had. They played the Granada but without Brian Jones who’d got lost in thick fog somewhere near the town. Bill Wyman later said, “We had a gig in Aylesbury… Brian left in his car and drove to Cheltenham to see his parents.” The poor weather meant, “Our speed dropped to 15 m.p.h. and we crept along, following the cat’s eyes. Our one-hour trip by now had taken three hours and we were on the outskirts of Aylesbury when Mick shouted as Brian’s car loomed out of the fog and began to pass us. Brian was obviously lost and heading in the opposite direction. We all yelled out of the windows, but were unheard.” “We arrived at Aylesbury and played two concerts without him.”
    3. Murderous
Mild mannered Aylesbury a hot bed of deadly goings on? Well, yes. But don’t worry everyone walked away. We’re talking of the TV show Midsomer Murders starring John Nettles which was largely shot (stabbed, poisoned and suffocated) in and around Aylesbury making it the fictional ‘murder capital of the UK’.
Scenes for Stanley Kubrick’s dystopian and often controversial movie A Clockwork Orange were also shot in Friar’s Square, but those scenes didn’t make the final cut.
    4. Lady Of Mercia
One of the largest and most important towns of the Ancient Britons, it became a major stronghold for Anglo Saxons when they fought against Viking invasion. It was one of the capital towns of the Kingdom of Mercia and where Æthelflæd, Lady of Mercia and daughter of Alfred the Great often stayed there. Æthelflæd captured Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and even freed York from Viking rule known as Danelaw.
    5. Our ‘enry
Henry VIII made Aylesbury the county town of Buckinghamshire to win favour with Thomas Boleyn who owned Aylesbury manor and was a wealthy landowner. It did the trick, Thomas was suitably impressed and soon Henry was married to Thomas’s daughter, Anne Boleyn. Things didn’t have such a happy ending after that. Having lost her heart to Henry, she eventually lost her head too.
    6. Aylesbowie
According to local music fans, David Bowie made his debut performance as Ziggy Stardust at Friars music venue in 1972 (although this is hotly contested with many pointing to the Toby Jug pub in Tolworth, Surrey). Crowdfunding helped raise £100,000 for a statue in honour of the singer, ‘Earthly Messenger’, in Aylesbury’s Market Square, which has built in speakers that play a Bowie song every hour. In 2018 there was even a campaign to change the town’s name to Aylesbowie.
Other town campaigns to rename Cher-borne, Adele-laide and Aha-rtlepool might have been made up by us.

    About Aylesbury

David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Henry the VIII and even the infamous Great Train Robbers have all added to the wonderful and at times murderous history of Aylesbury (don’t worry, the high body count was mostly to the fictional fatalities in TV’s Midsomer Murders that was filmed in the town).

Another major event was the Battle of Aylesbury when royalist troops lead by Prince Rupert took on a Parliamentarian force. The roundheads were greatly outnumbered but soundly beat the Prince’s men… Allegedly. In fact, there is no evidence of a battle ever having taken place other than in Parliamentarian pamphlets of the day and it’s likely the famous ‘battle’ was actually as fictional as Midsomer and merely propaganda to help rally the populace behind the New Model Army’s cause.

The town is also famed for the Aylesbury duck, which were once extensively farmed here and used for their feathers (much sought after for the finest bedding), but mostly for their meat.

    Things to do & see

The town still has great foodie credentials with some fantastic places to grab a bite, a weekly market full of tasty treats and some delicious pubs in and around the town centre. There’s a theatre, cinema plenty of independent shops and high street favourites plus a very rich musical history and the town has hosted some huge names in British rock history.

There are several golf courses in the area, Discover Bucks Museum is another popular local attraction or you can get lost in Chiltern Forest and the stunning Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

    Transport

Trains to London Marylebone leave twice hourly and take under an hour. By car the journey time is around 1 hr 20 minutes. The town is equidistant from the M1, M40 and a short hop from the M25 offering excellent road links. The nearest airport is Luton, less than 20 miles away.
