Basingstoke Facts – Did You Know…

    1. It Came Second
It’s not the original Basing. Now called Old Basing, the village was the original settlement of an Anglo-Saxon chieftain Basa and his tribe the Basingas, it lies 2 miles to the east, away from its bigger and brasher namesake. In 871 Old Basing was the site of a battle between the future Alfred the Great and his brother King Æthelred against the invading Vikings (who won the day).
    2. Basing House
The original village is also home to Basing House, the site of three sieges by Parliamentarian forces against the Royalist supporting household. The Royalist troops won the first two battles but on the third occasion, facing failure again, the Roundheads were relieved by Oliver Cromwell who with siege engines destroyed the house and invited locals to carry stone away for building (and to prevent it being rebuilt). Some of those stones ended up in new Basingstoke.
    3. Wote Street Willie
Erected in 1994, the 9ft statue took sculptor Michael Peglar over 2,000 hours to create and was designed as a symbol of tranquillity reflecting the town’s Roman routes and proximity to Stonehenge (which is actually in a neighbouring county and 40 miles away?!?). The artist said of his work, “It is a monumental piece of granite and it forces people to think about their own mortality and spirituality. It is a calming, tranquil, static image.” Sadly, the local populace didn’t agree and most thought it looked like… well, a ‘willy’ and it has had the local nickname ever since.
    4. Famous Faces
Notable Basingstoke residents have included; Jane Austin (author) The Duke of Wellington, Sarah Beany (TV presenter), Tom Cleverley (footballer), Ruth Ellis (last woman hanged in England), Thomas Burberry (founder of Burberry) Joseph Storrs Fry (founder of Fry’s Chocolate), Ian McNeice (actor) and Steve Lamacq (radio DJ). Arthur Dent in Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy came from Basingstoke and Rodney Trotter (Only Fools and Horses) was expelled from art college in Basingstoke, what a plonker!
    5. Burberry
Thomas Burberry arrived in Basingstoke in 1856 and set up a draper’s shop aged just 21. His major breakthrough came when he noticed shepherds’ linen smocks repelled water because of the oils from the sheep’s’ wool. Young Burberry set about inventing a fabric that would repel water and keep out the wind. He called his new fabric ‘Gabardine’. Both Amundsen and Scott used tents made of Gabardine in their race to the South Pole, the successful Amundsen wrote to Burberry, “Heartiest thanks. Burberry overalls were made extensive use of during the sledge journey to the Pole and proved real good friends indeed”. Trench coats were soon issued to all British army officers and named after their use in the trenches, they later became a fashion must have, loved by TV detectives and spies the world over.

    About Aylesbury

Basingstoke is an unashamedly modern town, from the network of ring roads that help commuters and steer traffic away from the town centre, to the cool venues, excellent sports facilities and large shopping centre.

Businesses, cafes, eateries, galleries all have a modern edge, the area does have history and even a ‘living museum’ but it doesn’t tend to dwell on it’s past, instead it is embracing the future. Fast fibre-optic broadband is readily accessible, there are strong green initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and funky start-ups increasing employment opportunities. It really is a town that’s going places, making housing increasingly sought-after. Rainbow removals have been helping people relocate to and from the town and surrounding villages, with local experience and knowledge to make your move simple.

    Things to do & see

The town really does have it all, good restaurants, a cinema, theatre, live music venues and a huge selection of shops, from Festival Place shopping centre with easy parking and myriad of stores all under one roof, to some cool independent shops and delis. There are also more retail parks than you can shake a loyalty card at, ideal for any Basingstoke newbies looking to starting putting their stamp on their new home. While there are no major sports teams in the town, there are very good sporting facilities, clubs and gyms. Outside of town you’ll find riding centres, fisheries, golf courses and areas for simply enjoying the great outdoors. Milestones Living Museum is another fascinating place worth a visit.

    Education

Basingstoke has a large number of nurseries, primary and secondary schools which include academies. There are also several specialist schools tailored for pupils with a range of educational needs, from ages 4 to 18. For tertiary students the town has two colleges.

    Transport

Getting around the town is easy, while some might occasionally poke fun at the roundabouts (granted, there are a lot), it does make driving easy and keeps passing traffic and large goods vehicles away from the town centre and housing areas. The passing M3 motorway offers easy access to the M25 or the A303 leads down to the South West. There are plenty of cycle paths and lanes for eco commuters and good bus services are handy for pupils looking to head across town to their preferred school. Trains to London can take as little as 45 minutes.
