Beaconsfield Facts – Did You Know…

    1. New Labour
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair stood as MP for Beaconsfield in 1982. 29 at the time, he came third and secured so few votes he didn’t get his deposit back. He successfully stood in Sedgefield in 1983 on his way to Downing Street.
    2. Stand & Delivered
With two major routes in the area (both began as Roman roads), Beaconsfiled and the surrounding location was the hunting ground of highwaymen. Two of those are known to have been caught and were hanged for their crimes at Tyburn in London. Cut Throat Wood and Highwayman’s Farm are both named after the nefarious skulduggery of these villainous rogues.
    3. Toy Town
Beaconsfield is home to world’s oldest model village. Built in 1928 by a wealthy accountant at his country home, his wife had told him his model train had to leave house, so he built it in the garden instead. As it grew, he decided to open it to the public to raise money for charity, which it continues to do to this day. Enid Blyton, a regular visitor with her children, even wrote a story based on it, The Enchanted Village.
    4. Our Enid
Enid Blyton lived in Beaconsfield and wrote all 21 of her Famous Five novels along with her Secret Seven adventures. Arguably her most famous character Noddy was also born during her time in the town. Noddy’s books have gone on to sell over 20,000,000 copies and inspired cartoons, movies and even music albums.
    5. Isn’t that what-his-name…?
Other famous faces to have lived in Beaconsfield include TV and radio presenter Zoe Ball, actor and funny man James Cordon, tycoon and dragon Peter Jones, guitarist Bert Weedon, singer Beverley Craven, F1 driver Romain Grosjean, Bee Gee Barry Gibb, Top Gear’s Chris Harris and Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli was made Earl of Beaconsfield by Queen Victoria.
    6. Bookish
Beaconsfield has been a very creative location for the written word. Sir Terry Pratchett was born here, G.K. Chesterton was buried here, writers and poets Robert Frost, Edmund Waller, Alison Uttley and Piers Paul Read all lived there.
    7. Gone Hollywood
“The name’s Field, Beaconsfield.” Scenes for James Bond blockbuster Thunderball were shot in the town along with comedy horror Hot Fuzz and the Noel Coward penned classic Brief Encounter directed by David Lean with a cast that included Trevor Howard, Celia Johnson, Sophia Lauren and Richard Burton. It’s also been deadly! Midsomer Murders and Lewis have both been filmed there.
