Bracknell Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Priests & Robbers
As the name suggests, the Old Manor House pub was once a grand manor house and dates back to the 12th century. One former owner was the first veterinary surgeon for Royal Ascot Racecourse (which opened in 1711). As one of Bracknell’s oldest buildings, it has a fascinating history including the discovering of priest holes (used to hide catholic priests from persecution). There are also rumoured to have been tunnels used by highwaymen to evade capture. One such tunnel is believed to lead straight to the former Hinds Head Inn, so perhaps it was merely a speedy route for the Lord of the Manor to enjoy a pint?
    2. The One & Only
Two films that starred Sean Connery have been partially shot in Bracknell, Time Bandits and The Offence. Bracknell was also a location for the film Buddy’s Song, while the movie might not be well remembered, its powerful theme song made the movie’s young star Chesney Hawkes a household name and 80s one hit wonder. Altogether now…. “I am the one and only…”
    3. Harry Potter
Bracknell has its own piece of cinematic history. Picket Post Close was used as the filming location for 4 Privet Drive, the home of the Dursley’s where young Harry was forced to live in a cupboard under the stairs in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The close still attracts Harry Potter fans, often known as ‘Potterheads’.
    4. The Devil’s Highway
Passing close to Bracknell, The Devil’s Highway was one of the most important roads of Roman Britain, connecting London (Londinium) with Silchester and built around AD47. The road helped transport goods, troops, dignitaries and was also gratefully used by Queen Boudica and her troops on route to sacking London, the Roman’s most important city.
    5. Nothing To See Here
At the time that Queen B was leading her furious horde to London, Bracknell was little more than a village (not even a grand one) tucked away in Great Windsor Forest. One of the earliest recordings of the settlement dating back to 942 name it as Braccan Heal, meaning an area inhabited by Bracca’s people.
    6. Brick House
Many Bracknell locals claim the bricks of 10 Downing Street were made in the town. This is hotly contested by Londoners who claim all the bricks (which are actually light brown and painted black, the colour the bricks had been turned by soot) are purely of London origin (fight!). Bracknell certainly did have a thriving brick industry in the 19th century, as for No 10s bricks, possibly just a great marketing ploy to help put Bracknell on the map.
    7. End of the Road
The town has some wonderfully weird road, some of which defy any form of explanation, some are just downright strange, but they all add to the colour of Bracknell. Worlds End Hill, Nine Mile Ride (which isn’t nine miles long), Mushroom Castle (no mushrooms or a castle to be found), Wagbullock Rise, Chuff Corner, Lammas Mead and Golden Orb Wood (there is no actual wood, just a private road).

    About Bracknell

Nestled in the glorious Berkshire countryside, Bracknell offers access to hidden country pubs, beautiful and ancient woodland and London’s glittering West End with its shops, galleries, restaurants and theatre district. The town’s excellent location also makes it a prime commuter location for those heading into to the city or other nearby major towns such as Reading or Slough.

Bracknell boasts its own restaurants, bars and eateries, good shops and a wide variety of clubs and groups, from theatre and photography to gardening and sports teams. There are also a number of major employers in the area along with start-ups, independent and artisan companies and employers.

Sports fans can consider Bracknell one of the best sporting locations in the country. Yes, Manchester and Liverpool might wave their football heritage in protest at such a statement, but Twickenham, Royal Ascot, Sunningdale and Wentworth golf courses can all boast major sporting events are just a short distance away. Even Wimbledon and Wembley are under an hour away.

If you prefer swinging a club in anger rather than simply cheering from the gallery, Berkshire Golf Course, Downshire Golf Complex and Lavender Park are all within easy reach, with memberships, shops, bar and restaurants plus regular social events for club members.

If your perfect idea of spot involves the tranquil calm of the riverbank then Berkshire in general and specifically the area around Bracknell really doesn’t disappoint. Day tickets for a number of ponds, lakes and rivers in the area are available through Bracknell Herons Angling Club. The Mill Pond and Finch Farm Fishery (try saying that with a hook and lure between your lips!) are also handy, well-maintained locations for keen anglers.

Bracknell originally sat within Great Windsor Forest and there are still 2,600 acres of forest to explore along with Spinney Forest. As well as huge numbers of deer, rare firecrests, red kites, buzzards, kestrels, owls and peregrine falcons all call the area home.

The early village had less than 100 inhabitants, it was in the 20th century that Bracknell was selected as a New Town with a planned population of 25,000. By the 1960s the population had exploded, reaching 60,000. Today the population stands at over 80,000 with 250 listed buildings.
