Camberley Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Camberley vs Cambridge
Camberley started as a small collection of shops, inns and houses on Bagshot Heath, that served the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. But it wasn’t always ‘Camberley’, the town was originally called Cambridge Town, in honour of the Duke of Cambridge. However, the more famous university town (and subsequent confusion over two similarly named towns) caused the folk of Camberley to rename the town, and lo, Camberley was born!
    2. Daylight Robbery!
Camberley was built on a section of Bagshot Heath that came to be considered the ‘most dangerous place in Britain’. Not because of the residents, it was highwaymen, footpads and robbers that prowled the heath looking for easy targets. Mary Frith (aka Moll Cutpurse), William Davies (The Golden Farmer who was caught after his wife repeatedly paid local merchants with gold) and Claude Duval (a true ‘dandy highwaymen’ who was born into French nobility) were all feared prowled the area. The most famous highwaymen of them all, Dick Turpin (who later became a folklore hero but was actually a merciless predator) also plied his dubious trade on the heaths around Surrey.
    3. When Will I Be Famous
Camberley has some surprising musical credentials and a lot of them for a relatively small town. Sam Brown (Stop, daughter of Joe Brown), 80s heartthrobs Bros and Five Star, Arthur Sullivan (one half of operatic duo Gilbert and Sullivan), Sir Richard Stilgoe (co-writer of Starlight Express and Phantom of the Opera), Rick Wakeman (Yes keyboard player), Bruce Wooley (co-writer Video Killed the Radio Star) and 90s boyband 5ive.
    4. Viva La Common
Surrey has a unique place in British military history and there are a number of bases and training camps, some with ties back to the Napoleonic wars. During WWII the Free French Army (troops that had evaded capture when France was occupied by Germany), used Old Dean Common as a base and training camp.
    5. Raving Mad!
The Dog and Partridge pub in nearby Yateley was the certified headquarters of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. Established by the colourful Screaming Lord Sutch, one of its later leaders, Catmandu (yes, an actual cat was leader of a political party – insert your own political comment here – ), came to a sticky and sad end after being struck by a car on Reading Road.
    6. Steady On Old Chap!
Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe, wrote A tour thro’ the whole island of Great Britain in 1726. Essentially a travel guide written as he travelled across the country, he described the area that is now Camberley as “…a mark of the just resentment shew’d by Heaven upon the Englishmen’s pride… horrid and frightful to look on, not only good for little, but good for nothing”. Bit rude.
    7. Glorious Mud
The first ever motocross event has held in Camberley. On March 29th 1924, the Southern Scott Scramble began with 80 starters and plenty of mud. Only 40 riders finished and the eventual winner was the suitably named Arthur Sparks.

    About Camberley

Principally formed as an annex to the nearby Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, with shops, traders (and of course pubs) serving the military personnel, Camberley, which was originally named Cambridge Town, (but was causing confusion for the General Post Ofifce) was built on a rather forlorn area of Bagshot Heath which was untamed scrubland that was considered no use to agriculture. Despite giving up its claims on the name ‘Cambridge’, Camberley still has postmen scratching their heads with areas including Crawley Hill (the town of Crawley being 47 miles away) and York Town (the original York being a mere 227 miles distant).

Today it is a thriving commuter town with excellent transport links to London and Guildford with its own rich military links. A large proportion of the town are connected with the armed services. The Corps of the Royal Engineers (the ‘Sappers’) have been stationed in the town, although in recent years many of the military buildings and instillations have given way to housing, much of it incorporating the original buildings, some of which are listed.

Things to do & see in Camberley

    Things to do & see

There is a recently built leisure and retail park, a cinema and a modern theatre which hosts touring productions and puts on an annual pantomime. Kids (of all ages) can enjoy the skate park, while golfers can head to Camberley Heath Golf Club, which is one of several in the area. There are plenty of sports facilities and health clubs, a trampoline park, indoor climbing wall or museums or your get-up-and-go is a little more get-up-and-know.
