High Wycombe Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Weighty Matters
One of the quirkiest town traditions in England, High Wycombe weighs its mayors. Dating back to the Medieval era, the town’s mayor is publicly weighed at the beginning and end of each term to ensure they haven’t gained weight on the taxpayers’ money. Not only is it done in public, but the town crier actually shouts out to the gathered crowd to let them know if the sitting dignitary has put on a few pounds. Harsh!
    2. Chair Raising
High Wycombe is famous for making chairs but not so many people know about its towers. In 1877 Queen Victoria visited the town and the locals pulled together to create a huge arch for her to pass through, made out of its famous chairs.  In 1889 they were at it again, this time the arch was to mark the return of local benefactor Sir Edwin Dashwood from New Zealand. When Queen Elizabeth II arrived in 1962 she too was greeted by a chair arch. Most recently an arch was built to celebrate the new millennium in 2000.
    3. Hellfire Club
While Sir Edwin Dashwood was celebrated by locals, his father Sir Francis Dashwood achieved much more infamy. He created the notorious Hellfire Club close to nearby Medmenham Abbey. The secretive club met for quasi-religious ceremonies/orgies which were really debauched parties that many notable names of the day attended. Sir Francis was famed for his womanising partying and drinking which is pretty ironic because as Chancellor of the Exchequer he introduced a tax on cider that led to riots across the country.
    4. I Predict A Riot
Riots came to Wycombe in 1830. The town’s paper mill was bringing in new machinery that would increase production and save on labour. Like many towns of the time, local workers weren’t happy and they ransacked the mill, destroying the machines. A number of the rioters were caught, put on trial and transported to the penal colonies in Australia.
    5. Cup Runneth Over
Wycombe Wanderers FC is the only lower league football club to have reached the semi-finals of both the League Cup and FA Cup. On both occasions they were sitting in the bottom two leagues, an achievement the club is rightly proud of.
    6. Famous Sons
The town has some very famous sons. Punk musician Ian Dury, fanny man Jimmy Carr and rugby and Question of Sport captain Matt Dawson all attended High Wycombe’s Grammar where poet TS Eliot was a teacher. They’re not the only ones, John Hampden Grammar School has produced some equally notable alumni, including mad culinary professor Heston Blumenthal and fantasy author Sir Terry Pratchett who went on to write for local paper Buck’s Free Press before selling millions of books worldwide.
