Hungerford Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Name Game
One theory behind the name Hungerford links it to the Danish King Hingwar, also known as ‘Ivar the Boneless’, son of the legendary Viking Ragnar Lodbrok. Hingwar was King of East Anglia in AD 869 and a terrifying figure who’s enemies often endured particular cruel ends. One 14th century chronicler records the death of Hingwar to have drowned at a crossing ‘Hingwar’s Ford’. By the 13th century the town had become Hungerford and been given royal status with the title Hungerford Regis (Royal Hungerford), however it lost its crowing moniker when the King gave it to the Duke of Lancaster.
    2. Grin & Bear It
Now the Bear Inn, this historic pub was a hospice back in 1464, with links to the Hospital of St John and the Knights Hospitaller. The pub was later visited by Elizabeth I, it was an eventful trip as her coachmen died during her stay. In 1644 King Charles I slept at the inn after his retreat from the Second Battle of Newbury. He remained in the town for three days along with a thousand of his troops.
    3. Tut Tut, Kiss Kiss
The second Tuesday after Easter is etched in the Hungerford calendar as Hocktide. Once a traditional celebration across the region when people gathered in towns to pay their taxes (the gatherings attracted merchants and entertainers looking for a quick coin). Today two ‘Tutti Men’ collect fines and payments at the Hocktide Court. The strangest part of the tradition are the “Orange-Man” who give oranges to ladies in return for a kiss. We’re not sure who should be feared more, the men coming to tax you or kiss you!
    4. Common People
Datchet Common has played a major part of local history. At one time it may well have been used for archery practise on the orders of the King (all men of age were required to train with a bow in readiness for war). During the 1800s it was the site of entertainment such as bare-knuckle fights. In 1872 it was used for army manoeuvres by the Northern Army on route to Salisbury Plain and during WWI it became a landing strip for some of the earliest airplanes. On the 10th of August, 1944 around 18,000 people gathered on the common for a parade by American troops in front of the Allied Supreme Commander, General Dwight Eisenhower, who awarded medals to some of the men who had recently returned from the D-Day landings. The Common retains common rights for people to graze animals.
    5. Boo!
Just to the south of the town, the A338 has been the location for several spooky sightings of a woman, riding a grey horse by day, at night she reappears in a coach being pulled by four horses. However she’s not quite as well known as the ghosts at nearby Littlecote House Hotel. According to legend, ‘Mother Barnes’ a local midwife was blindfolded and taken by a man to attend a birth. After the child was born the man, later identified as ‘Wild William Darrel’, snatched the baby and threw it in the fire. Mother Barnes had snatched a piece of clothe from the room which helped convict Darrel who was sentenced to death. Three ghosts are said to haunt the hotel, William Darrel, Mother Barnes and the apparition of a woman, holding a newborn baby.
