Milton Keynes Facts – Did You Know…

    1. The Green Green Grass of Keynes
A major misconception is that MK is a modern, grey concrete town, which couldn’t be more wrong! It’s incredibly green. Covering 119 square miles, the borough is 40% green space, with 5,000 acres of parkland, 20 million trees and shrubs, 15 lakes and 11 canals. It also has more bridges than Venice and more waterside than the island of Jersey!
    2. Cock & Bull
The phrase “It’s all cock and bull” comes from the area. During the 18th and 19th centuries Stony Stratford was a stop off for stagecoaches travelling to and from London. The village’s two inns became major hubs for travellers bringing news and locals telling tall tales. The stories coming from the Cock Inn and Bull Inn became so fanciful, they soon had their own frame of reference with learned listeners decrying anything they considered a ‘cock and bull story.’
    3. Milton Henge
Ok, so Salisbury’s mighty monument might have history on its side but the people of Milton would point out that it’s far too old. Milton’s salute to the solstice is younger, funkier and the entire town moved for it. When planners were deciding on the layout, one grand plan was Midsummer Boulevard that lines up with the rising sun on the summer solstice. To get it exactly right, the entire town’s construction had to be lined up accordingly.
    4. New Build
Famously a ‘new town’, Milton Keynes was the last of the new towns to be created after the WWII to help rehouse some of London’s overcrowded and bombed out suburbs. Planning for the town was designed to give them green spaces and easy transport. The town was built on the US grid system but with the added joy of roundabouts. More than 130 of them in fact!
    5. Sporting Credentials
Doing a quick step-over to swerve our way past the controversy that is MK Dons FC, Milton has really good sporting credentials and some superb sports facilities. Not only is the title winning F1 racing team Red Bull Racing based in the town, other locally grown sporting talent includes Ian Poulter (Ryder Cup golfer), Deli Alli (England international footballer), Greg Rutherford (2012 gold medal winning triple jumper), Jeffrey Schlupp (PL footballer), Sam Tomkins (England rugby international), and Ben Chilwell (England international footballer), who all grew up or lived in the town.
    6. Don’t Have A Cow!
Milton’s famous cows arrived in the town in 1978 and have been dividing opinion ever since. They are certainly Marmite, there have been petitions to have them removed, petitions to have them saved, they’ve been attacked, stolen, kidnapped and held to ransom, turned into skeletons, dressed in pyjamas, graffitied (notably with “BSE” during the Mad Cow Disease outbreak) and beheaded. There’s even a local brewery named after MK’s bovine BFFs. Today they are on display at the Milton Keynes Museum but who knows? Maybe they’ll be allowed to roam free again one day?

    About Milton Keynes

The largest and last of Britain’s post WWII ‘new towns’, while it was once derided for its modern layout, and funny ways, it’s now proving what a vision of the future it was. Clever planning created a town full of wide-open spaces and green areas, far removed from the sprawling urban jungle the influx of former London residents were escaping from. There is a great eco-ethos, 40% green space and plenty of greener initiatives. It’s hard-working, over 70% of companies in MK, began there. It plays well too, with music venues, activities and lots to keep locals entertained.

    Things to do & see

Amersham has an excellent museum covering the history of the town and surrounding area, there is also the slightly more niche Amersham Fair Organ Museum. If you cuddly days out then Kew Little Pigs is one of the cutest spots on the planet, a farm and visitor centre dedicated to miniature pigs where guests can feed and stroke these petite porcine pals.

The nearest golf course is just a 5-minute drive away and there are 3 more in the area. Football fans have nearby Watford FC to shout at. Cyclists are spoilt for choice with so many great routes. Movie buffs can be at the magical world of Warner Bros Studios (home to the Harry Potter experience) in just over 20 minutes. Foodies have a seemingly endless array of farm shops, country pubs, cafes and delis to get their teeth into. There is even the Mad Squirrel micro-brewery and tap room for beer-lovers. We’ll drink to that!

    Transport

With its modern US style grid layout and 130+ roundabouts, Milton Keynes is pretty easy for drivers. If you prefer your urban transport to be emissions free, there is a really good network of cycle paths, cycle lanes and greener transport initiatives across the town. Just off the M1 and a short distance from the M40, wider transport links are good. It’s just 1 hour from Heathrow and commuters can be at London Euston in 35 minutes.
