Newbury Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Old School
Today it might look like a modern state school, but St Bartholomew’s actually dates back to 1466 and is one of England’s oldest school.
    2. Who Are You?
In 1966, The Who were booked to play Newbury’s Corn Exchange. Party legends Keith Moon and John Entwistle went missing before the gig, but not wanting to disappoint their fans, singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend started the show with members from their support act. When Moon and Entwistle finally arrived, late and drunk, a fight broke out between the band members that left Moon with black eye and broken ankle.
    3. Newbury Gunner
Former Arsenal and England footballer Theo Walcott began his early career playing for Newbury FC.
    4. Fight!
Newbury was the site of not one but two battles during the English Civil War. The first battle kicked off in 1643 when the Earl of Essex, returning to London with his troops, found his way blocked by a Royalist army. Essex and his men won the day after the King’s troops ran out of gunpowder. In 1644 they were at it again when Donnington Castle was besieged for 20 months. Eventually the defending Royalists were allowed to leave before the Parliamentarians destroyed the castle.
    5. Horse Power
During the 18th and 19th centuries Newbury (the name comes from ‘New Burgh’ meaning new fort), which sat on the Bath Road connecting London with the South West, was a very important coach stop. This brought coaching inns, blacksmiths, farriers, theatres, brewers to the booming town. It also allowed the racecourse to flourish into one of the UK’s most famous tracks.
    6. Spooky Newbury
Walking around beautiful Newbury, the last thing you’d think is ‘creepy’, but the town has a number of spectral residents. Shaw House has its Grey Lady who has been seen walking the grounds. Market Place is home to Thomas Barrie, who had his ears cut off in 1538 for spreading rumours about King Henry VIII (a man not known for his sense of humour). He now walks through the square moaning, well, you can’t blame him. A ‘Quaker Lady’ has been seen in Cheap Street, close to the former Quaker burial ground. A non-existent piano has been heard playing in Northbrook Street, and the old theatre in Pelican Lane was the scene of a chilling murder when an actor stabbed his leading lady to death, some say she can still be heard. Finally the crew of a WWII Lancaster Bomber who crashed at RAF Welford are still occasionally seen crossing the runway… Who ya gonna call?
    7. The Newbury Coat
On the 25th of June, 1811, Newbury was host to one of the strangest races and bets ever laid. Local cloth maker John Coxeter had been boasting, “So great are the improvements in machinery I have lately introduced into my mill, that I believe that in twenty- four hours I could take the coat off your back, reduce it to wool, and turn it back into a coat again.” Sir John Throckmorton spotted a challenge and bet Coxeter a thousand guineas it couldn’t be done. Coxeter countered that Throckmorton would sit down to dinner at 8pm the following evening in a coat made of wool that had been on sheeps’ backs a 5am that morning. Word spread through the day and crowds began to appear cheering on Coxeters workers. The coat was finished at 20 past 6 that evening, Sir John paid up and Mr Coxeter spent his winnings on 120 gallons of beer for the 5,000 strong crowd that had gathered. As for the two generous sheep who had given their coats? They were roasted and enjoyed by the gathered masses. In 1991 a new Newbury Coat was made using exactly the same process, beating the previous time by over an hour.
    8. Proper Pudding
John Coxeter was at it again after the Battle of Waterloo. To celebrate the nation’s victory, he ordered a pudding to be made, but not just any pudding. The 20ft plum pudding was the work of 12 ladies, it was so monstrous it had to be pulled on a timber wagon by 2 oxen, decorated in ribbons, with a sword bearing driver. The locals were invited to enjoy a slice and a local journalist reported wrote of the pudding it was “as nice as mother makes ’em.”

    About Newbury

Synonymous with its famous racecourse, Newbury is quintessentially British. A town packed with history, daring tales of heroic and often eccentric deeds, ghost stories and romance, the town quite rightly celebrates its past in the annual events and festivals of which there are many.

Miles and miles of glorious countryside offer pastoral escapes along with excellent transport links that make it a popular commuter town and attracts large employers to the area.

The town itself retains much of its charm, quirky street names and the curios layout hint at its early roots. However today it is a modern thriving town with green credentials, a large number of tech companies and funky independent start-ups making everything from artisan breads to craft beers and award-winning wines.

    Things to do & see

Newbury has a cinema as well as a number of live entertainment venues plus some superb restaurants and bars. The town hosts a regular farmers market as well as a Christmas market and events throughout the year.

Newbury Golf Club is the local venue for golfists to swear at their woods/irons/putter or anything else affecting their game that day, while at the racecourse there is a driving range (more hitting, less shouting). But this is of course horse country and there are a number of stables and riding centres across the area, as well as some great trails and rides to enjoy. However, you don’t need a horse, the glorious countryside is perfect for walking, hiking, cycling, picnics, or just breathing and being still, because sometimes, that’s all you need.

    Transport

Close to the edge of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Newbury is not far from the M4 motorway giving access to London or South Wales. To the south the M3 leads down to Southampton while the A303 is the main route heading down to Cornwall and the South West. Trains to London take under an hour.
