Thatcham Facts – Did You Know…

    1. All Kicking Off
Walking through Thatcham or its neighbour, Newbury, it’s hard to picture these two peaceful towns as enemies but at one times things really did kick off. After King Henry I gave Thatcham to Reading Abbey, the Abbot gave the town rights to hold a fair and market. By the time of Henry II’s reign, Thatcham market was a bit too successful and the merchants of Newbury weren’t too pleased about trade heading elsewhere. They turned up on mass, kicked over the Thatcham’s stalls and threatened stall holders (how rude!). But don’t worry, the towns have since made up and the fair has undergone a revival with residents of both towns joining the festivities. Today the biggest danger is eating too many cakes.
    2. Britain’s Oldest Settlement?
Excavations in the area discovered traces of early human activity dating back to the Palaeolithic (Old Stone) Age, 50,000-10,000 BC. However further items revealed signs of settlement during the Mesolithic, 8,500BC – 4,000 BC, that is thought to have continued through to today. Even the Guinness Book of Records claimed Thatcham to be the oldest continual settlement in Britain. Take that Newbury!
    3. Any Old Iron
Later excavations created much head scratching and tutting among historians around the world. Items revealed iron working to have taken place around 1,000 BC, that’s 250 years before the Iron Age was believed to have begun causing history books to have to be re-written. Pfft! Typical Thatcham, upsetting everyone again!
    4. The Name Game
Around 500 AD a Saxon leader and his people took up residency and possibly gave his name to the area, Tace Ham (‘ham’ being the Saxon word for ‘village’). However the earliest written reference of Thatcham sometime between 951 AD – 975 AD gives the name as ‘Thaecham’, ‘thaec’ being another Saxon word meaning to cover a roof in reads (thatch). So, the naming jury is still out on the exact roots of the town’s name.
    5. Meet The Neighbours
As well as the Palaeolithic nomads, Mesolithic settlers, Iron Age workers and Saxon thatchers, Thatcham was also home to Romans with evidence of a large settlement beside what was a major Roman road. Thatcham, in the guise of Camp 1001 just outside the town, was also home to German POWs during WWII. It was one of the largest prisoner of war camps in the South of England.
    6. Haven’t You Grown!
In 2011 the UK census recorded the population of Thatcham as 26,017. When the first major UK census was completed, William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book of 1086, Thatcham consisted of 35 villagers, 12 smallholders, 147 acres of meadowland, swine herds, woodland and 2 mills.

    About Thatcham

A historic market town (and considered by some to be the oldest continuously settled location in Britain), Thatcham is a fascinating town that has helped rewrite the history books thanks to discoveries of early iron work taking place 250 years before the Iron Age was previously thought to have begun.

Today it is a small, bustling town with artisan makers, bakers and crafts people, good shops, great eateries. It has a busy social calendar with festivals, live music, sports teams, local groups and societies and good access to transport networks.

    Things to do & see

There are a number of golf courses and driving ranges in the area. If you prefer your driving on four wheels there is plenty to get out and see, with great country pubs and stunning scenery including the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Nature Discovery Centre close to the River Kennet really is worth a visit. There are farm shops dotted around the area, a rich vein of antiques shops and some great places to eat or just rest a while and enjoy the Berkshire countryside.

    Transport

The town lies close to the A339 offering access to Basingstoke and the M3. To the north the M4 leads on to Heathrow (54 minutes) and London. Trains to London take as little as 48 minutes. There are also some great walks, cycle paths and bridle ways if you prefer more eco friendly travel.
