Windsor Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Windsor Castle
Built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. 40 monarchs, including Her Majesty The Queen, have made the castle their home. During WWII the Royal Family, including the young Princess Elizabeth stayed in the castle where the windows were blacked out and chandeliers and heavy hanging objects taken down. The future Queen occasionally slept in the dungeons due to their impenetrable walls.
    2. Who Has The Time?!?
The castle has over 450 clocks which when changing to British Summer Time takes the castle’s horologist 16 hours to complete. It’s even worse when the clocks go back as moving them forward 11 hours takes 18 hours! The Great Kitchen (where the clocks are set 5 minutes fast so the food is never served late) is similarly impressive, it has served 32 monarchs and has a giant mixer that can whisk 250 eggs at a time. Perfect for serving at the 53-metre banqueting table that can seat 160 guests. The Queen personally inspects the table to make sure everything is as it should be before entertaining guests and dignitaries.
    3. Tale of Two Windsors
‘New’ Windsor is three miles from what is now known as Old Windsor, which had been the site of Edward the Confessors palace. The Royal Family also borrowed the name. The family name was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was considered far too Germanic during the First World War, so in 1917 Windsor was adopted instead.
    4. Rock Royalty
The Rolling Stones regularly gigged at the now defunct Ricky Tick Club, which was (at the Star and Garter Hotel) in Windsor, playing 39 times between 1962-64. Other stars to perform there included Rod Stewart, Elton John, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Howling Wolf and the then unknown Jimi Hendrix. Country star Shania Twain and Led Zepplin’s Jimmy Page both lived in Windsor, as did legendary comedian Sir Billy Connolly.
    5. Christmas Trees
Queen Charlotte, wife of George III is credited with introducing the idea of bringing a living Christmas tree indoors in what was always a huge family affair at Windsor. Later Queen Victoria added to our many Christmas traditions with ideas borrowed from their German ancestors.
    6. Are We There Yet?
In 1908 Windsor hosted the Olympic marathon which started outside Windsor Castle. The start line had to be moved before the finishing line was also altered to ensure the runners ended in front of where the Royal party were seated. The changes meant the exact distance was 26 miles and 385 yards which is still used to this day (so if ever you’re running a marathon, you know who to blame for those few extra yards!). Close to the Eton College shop, there is a house that still bears a marker from the 1908 race which reads “25 miles to go”.
    7. Deer Me!
Smiths Lawn in Great Windsor Park has 12 pitches. The area was used as a training ground for troops in WWI and as an airfield in WWII. During the Second World War much of the area was also given over to agriculture to help with the war effort and hundreds of the park’s deer were moved to Balmoral. Prince Philip played a major role in returning the deer to the park after the war.
