Wokingham Facts – Did You Know…

    1. Early Days
The town’s coat of arms include a field of acorns, representing the town’s forest history, it was once part of Windsor Forest. And also a Saxon crown, to depict Wocca, a Saxon leader, Wokingham derives from the ‘settlement of Wocca’s people’.
    2. A Bit Berking
Wokingham wasn’t always in Berkshire. Well, to be precise, half of it was. The other half was owned by the then Bishop of Salisbury and as such was considered to belong to Wiltshire. There is still a quirky, historic marker where Rose (Rows) Street and Wiltshire Road meet that shows the county boundary. Wokingham was incorporated into the county of Royal Berkshire in 1845.
    3. The Bells!
One of Wokingham’s former industries was bell making, the only visible remains of which is Foundry Lane. Bells made in Wokingham can still be found in churches around the country.
    4. The Dandy Highwayman.
Claude Duval came from a noble French family who fell on hard times after having to flee France. It’s believed Duval lived in a cottage in Highwater Lane. He’s notable for his fancy clothes, gentle and often amusing treatment of his victims (he was said to have charmed the ladies he robbed). He is one of a number of highwaymen and women who prowled the area in the 1600s including The Golden Farmer Moll Cutpurse and Dick Turpin.
    5. Not So Dandy
In the 1700s another gang prowled Windsor Forest. They were known as the Wokingham Blacks as they hid their appearance by blackening their faces. In 1723 Parliament made ‘blacking’ (the practise of blackening your face to commit a crime) a criminal offense. The gang who began as poachers but quickly moved on to robbery, blackmail and even murder(!?!), were caught after the Bow Street Runners (forerunner of the Police Force) were called in. They controlled the town and locals and even magistrates were too scared to tackle them. The runners infiltrated the gang and lured some members to London with the promise of easier victims. The rest of the gang were soon rounded up.
    6. Good Golly Miss Molly
Wokingham has two celebrated Molly’s. The first, Molly Mogg was the daughter of John Mogg, landlord of the Rose Inn. One day in 1726 three writers took shelter from a passing storm and to pass the time, wrote a poem about ‘Fair Molly Mogg’ and Edward Standen, heir to Arborfield Manor whose many advances Molly rejected. The three writers in question were Jonathon Swift (Gulliver’s Travels), John Gay (The Beggar’s Opera) and Alexander Pope (the second most quoted writer in the English language after Shakespeare). The second Molly is something of a mystery, she gave her name to Molly Millar Lane and she was believed to be a local witch.

    About Wokingham

Wokingham, which was originally named after a local chieftain, Wocca, was previously announced as the best place to bring up a family in the UK by The Daily Mail. The study considered factors including parks and green spaces, leisure and entertainment, schools, childcare, cost of living, crime rate and property prices.

Half the town originally stood in Wiltshire, as it was predominantly owned by the then Bishop of Salisbury. An old boundary marker can still be found in the town which today is 100% Royal Berkshire and proud of it.

Dick Francis (author) Will Young (singer/actor/Pop Idol winner), Nicholas Hoult (actor – About A Boy, Tolkein, X-Men, Kill Your Friends), Charlie Austin (footballer) have all either lived or were born in Wokingham. The town was also plagued by highwaymen and robbers, however the scourge of the highways were all dealt with back in the 1600 and 1700s so Wokingham newbies needn’t worry about being asked to “stand and deliver”.

    Things to do & see

If you enjoy green spaces then there is plenty to get out and explore in Wokingham and the surrounding area. California Country Park covers 40 hectares and is set within 100 acres of ancient heathland (it was here the aforementioned highwaymen lurked in waiting). Today the park offers scenic walks, wildlife watching, fishing and more. There is also Heath Lake, Dinton Pastures, Bucklers Forest, Simons Wood, Buckhurst Meadows and Rooks Nest. There is a Green Giant Trail in nearby Bracknell which is great fun for younger families. Pinewood Woodland Walk is also a well-defined route and stunning area to immerse yourself in nature and get some fantastic photos. A final mention should also go to Lilly Hill Park, home to the England’s largest picnic bench, perfect if you like making really long sandwiches!

As well as a good mix of independent shops and high street favourites, Wokingham has a number of annual events to watch or get involved with. If you’re looking for some weekend fun, there is a laser quest site, bowling alley, gym, swimming pool, theatre and cinema. A number of societies also meet regularly in the town encompassing a wide variety of interests, theatre, photography, cooking, book groups, sports clubs, cycling and more.

    Transport

Commuters can be in London Paddington in just 46 mins, there are also fast trains at the weekend to watch a West End show or do a little sightseeing or shopping. The town lies close to the M3 and not far from the M4 and M25 motorways giving great road travel routes and easier access for Wokingham removals. It’s also just 32 minutes to Heathrow Airport if you do decide you need to escape Berkshire for a little while.
